"Our Fake Democracy" by Timothy Egan

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/23/opinion/our-fake-democracy.html

I've been reading and re-reading Mr. Egan's NYT piece. As a teacher of reading and writing for 43 years, I am very impressed by Mr. Egan's eloquence and accuracy alike. I take the occasion to recommend this particular instance of his writing to all Americans who have grown sick of the lies of the Right and their theocratic assault on America. "We have a fake democracy, growing less responsive and less representative by the day." Of course, "the bit dogs will howl," as my grandfather would have said, but the louder they and their trainers howl the more we will know that Mr. Egan has told the truth. Let us hope the truth prevails, even in this maelstrom of Trumpocracy.

"Fake" Democracy and "fake" News

Hi Allen!

You seem to have an interest in "fake" news. CNN is presently involved in attempting to extricate themselves from promoting the nonsense regarding collusion between the Trump Campaign and the Russians, for details see: http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2017/06/25/very-fake-news-scandal-cnn-jeff-zucker-network-flack-refuse-to-comment-russia-retraction/

On another point, the very idea that the USA is a "fake" Democracy belies an ignorance of the difference between a Constitutionally Federated Democratic Republic i.e., a representative form of government and "one-man-one-vote" i.e., democracy. Even though much of what Federated the U.S. has been overcome via the ratification of the 17th Amendment and substantive due process - utilized by Federal Courts to nullify States Rights - we still have a sketch of Federated Government, and are certainly not a mere Democracy; to claim that we are is either mental laziness (generally the case), ignorance or the promulgation of a falsehood...?

There are many things - "intellectual movements" among others - which have preceded the conditions which today animate the insouciance of human choice regarding so many weighty matters e.g., electing our Representatives; one of the telling, and almost ubiquitous, results of/from the alteration in the dominant worldview is the reflex to incoherently emote regarding those things which pique our sentimental souls; consequentially misology seems to have inundated and captured most, allowing otherwise intelligent people to make some of the most patently inane claims...?

And Allen, it strikes that nonsense - written with the most eloquent of styles - is still nonsense!

Take Care, Allen!

Cordially,

tjd

BestThinking.com to Shut Down Permanently on December 31, 2017

If you want to save a copy of your content, you must do so before the website shuts down on December 31, 2017. We will NOT be able to provide any assistance after the website shuts down. We are available at support@thinkermedia.com only until the shutdown to provide more information and assistance.

It was a noble 10-year experiment, but it turns out that the writers with the best content are the least adept at the tech required to publish under our model, which in hindsight, makes perfect sense. If you are dedicating your life to becoming an expert in your specialty, you don’t have a lot of time left for figuring out publishing tech.

It hasn't helped that we have entered an age of unprecedented polarization and antagonism which doesn't foster demand for a website dedicated to the respectful engagement of diverse views.

Thank you, everyone!
