I Could've Been Dancing

I could've been dancing,

Spinning wildly,

Letting go and being in the moment.

Instead I let that urban Scots inhibition

Writ large in neon,

Rule with its odd mixture

Of sarcasm and sadism

And hidden tenderness.

I could've been dancing,

Just like I once did in Orford Road,

With Jennie,

In the first giddy, ecstatic flash,

Those Spring leaps of faith

And love.

I could've been dancing instead of watching

From the sidelines,

Footrail of the bar/sneering

at no one but me.

I will dance again,

even if takes 4 pints of stout.

No more wishing.

Only action.

I will dance with you, Jennie.

Even if it takes suspension of disbelief.
