About BestThinking

About Us for Readers

BestThinking is the web publishing side of ThinkerMedia, an independent digital publisher of well-written and thoughtful ebooks. BestThinking is not simply a content aggregator. It is a place for subject matter experts, feature writers, journalists and authors to assemble their best original content and curate the best content of other thought leaders.

BestThinking is different. There is no advertising or the intrusive tracking that invades your privacy. In fact, if you install the disconnect.me browser plugin, you will see that websites with advertising are typically secretly installing dozens of programs to track your every move on the Internet. There are none of these on BestThinking.com.

There are also no subscriptions, paywalls, or article limits with their constant badgering for your credit card here. Instead, BestThinking’s quality content is good enough to generate income from content syndication and ebooks.

A great new business model deserves a new and fresh editorial policy. BestThinking is the furthest thing from the too-numerous web publications littered with cookie-cutter content or so drenched in agenda that they can’t be trusted to be the truth. On BestThinking, readers can find insightful facts and fresh perspectives from a wide range of knowledgeable writers.

BestThinking is really a catalog of the best work of writers aspiring to be widely recognized for their ideas and insights in the topics to which they have dedicated their lives. The business model for BestThinking requires writers to create a trusted, long-term relationship with readers in order to be successful.

BestThinking writers are identity verified and thoroughly vetted. They are who they say they are and what they say is on the record. They are from refreshingly diverse backgrounds, more that 50% of whom have PhD, MD or other advanced degrees. What the others lack in advanced degrees, they excel in experience, dedication and insights. We emphasize prowess over pedigree. BestThinking writers are artists, authors, business leaders, doctors, journalists, philosophers, professors, programmers, poets, researchers, teachers and more, all striving to share their best ideas in the best way they know how.

The nameless provocateur and anonymous rhetorical bomb thrower—pests who ruin so many online discussions—have no place in BestThinking discussions. Content featured on BestThinking is never for the purpose of pushing and enforcing ideological agendas. BestThinking hews to no preconceived ideas on the right, left, middle or elsewhere. While some online publications embrace only conventional wisdom and orthodoxy, BestThinking encourages originality and contrast.

While we realize the principals in a debate will rarely persuade each other, in the right forum these discussions can profoundly impact the undecided. The discerning reader comes to BestThinking not for a lecture, snow job or sales pitch, but to learn, better understand and enjoy. BestThinking lets you make up your own mind. For example, readers of Trending Topics will almost always find links to works that differ in tone, emphasis and point of view from each other.

BestThinking is a counterpoint to the torrent of highly polarized echo chambers currently taking over the web and mainstream media. BestThinking is also a productive intermediary between popular content and academic publishing. It is a place for ideas perhaps not ready for a traditional peer-reviewed journal, but ready for an open discussion under a real name and reputation.

We welcome a wide range of diverse views and topics, requiring only that participants use their real identity and do not plagiarize, confuse opinion and fact, engage in direct commercialization or undermine a respectful discourse as described in the Participation Policy.

The result is an effective framework to formulate best thinking based on a common understanding of thoughtful opinion and discernible fact. We create the right environment for subject matter experts and informed laypeople to accelerate the vetting of ideas and solutions to problems of the day, both large and small.

More Information About...

Thinkers

What is a Thinker? Quite simply it is a term we use to describe our contributors. Smart, creative, talented and thoughtful people who create works to share are known as authors, writers, journalists, artists, poets, playwrights, videographers, engineers, scientists, teachers, doctors, musicians, athletes, and so on. We welcome them all at BestThinking, so we needed a way to refer to everyone. Further, it was not our objective to be just another encyclopedia of facts. We focus on the issues that can only be engaged in terms of the current best thinking on the issue. So it made sense to refer to the people sharing their best thinking to be referred to as Thinkers.

Thinkers on BestThinking share their work in four formats: Blogs, Articles, Topics and Ebooks, each with special characteristics to better meet readers' interests.

Blogs

Blogs are the most personal and informal format for sharing best thinking. Generally, Blogs on BestThinking are frequent, short, have a single writer’s perspective, and are mostly comprised of commentary, opinion, and personal insights on subjects of special and ongoing interest of the Thinker.  Blogs are given more leeway on expressing opinions and personal views, but still must not confuse opinion and fact. Blogs on BestThinking are expected to be valuable content by knowledgeable sources.

Articles

Articles are a formal format for sharing best thinking, where a bright line is drawn between opinion and fact, and facts are fully sourced and referenced as with professional and scientific journal articles. Opinions are allowed when clearly identified as such, and meet the rules for feature article (long) journalism. Articles are less frequent than Blogs, are of longer length, may have multiple writer perspectives, and are mostly comprised of research, facts, and well-developed theories on subjects where the Thinker has an established expertise. Articles can be a productive intermediary between popular content and academic publishing. It is a place for ideas perhaps not ready for a traditional peer-reviewed journal, but ready for an open discussion under a real name and reputation.

Topics

Topics are a special BestThinking format that is most like traditional journalism, but with important differences. While not intended for short-lived breaking news, Topics are based on current events that are “trending” and likely to have enduring interest. Topics are typically long lived and frequently updated. Topics have a core piece written by a Thinker who has a special and ongoing interest in the Topic, but also includes the best of other articles on the Topic from around the web, including alternative views. Topics understand that writers can have difficulty being an objective voice for alternative views, especially since the Thinker has developed an expertise in the Topic. In Topics, the alternative views are presented by links to the actual work by the proponents of the alternative views.

Ebooks

Ebooks are digital files formatted like traditional printed books designed to be read on special readers, such as Kindle, Nook, iPad/iPhone and other smartphones, tablets and desktop computers. BestThinking ebooks are produced in Mobi (Kindle) and ePub (everyone else) formats. Ebooks generally represent the longest, most formal and comprehensive work of the Thinker. Our ebook publishing model is a hybrid of the best of traditional publishing and the best of digital. Thinkers cannot pay to publish on BestThinking. We only publish ebooks we believe in and we make sure they are quality content, well written and well produced. Our ebooks are available in the major distribution channels, such as Apple, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble, as well as our own distribution, the ThinkerBooks Store.

BestThinking.com to Shut Down Permanently on December 31, 2017

If you want to save a copy of your content, you must do so before the website shuts down on December 31, 2017. We will NOT be able to provide any assistance after the website shuts down. We are available at support@thinkermedia.com only until the shutdown to provide more information and assistance.

It was a noble 10-year experiment, but it turns out that the writers with the best content are the least adept at the tech required to publish under our model, which in hindsight, makes perfect sense. If you are dedicating your life to becoming an expert in your specialty, you don’t have a lot of time left for figuring out publishing tech.

It hasn't helped that we have entered an age of unprecedented polarization and antagonism which doesn't foster demand for a website dedicated to the respectful engagement of diverse views.

Thank you, everyone!
