What does it take to be a Trending Topic Curator?

Any Thinker is welcome to be a Curator. If you’ve got something to say about a hot topic on today's news, Trending Topics are a great option for you.

Curators identify Trending Topics and write a brief summary about the subject. This includes providing relevant background information, identifying key concepts and examples, and explaining why the issues involved are important.

Once Curators have created this framework for the Trending Topic, they showcase the best Blogs, Articles, Ebooks and Media from around the Web to create the most comprehensive, reliable source online. But don’t worry – the BestThinking Content Harvester will deliver the content right to you. As the Topic Curator, you then sift through the information to pick out what you view as the most important materials. Instead of spending hours using search engines, you spend time providing commentary and building useful explanations of key issues.

Being a Topic Curator is like being a museum curator. Your job is to pick the best representative pieces and keep the collection fresh. BestThinking Curators should frequently revisit their work to keep it updated with the latest information. They should also contribute their own content through Blogs, Articles and Ebooks they have authored on BestThinking. Be sure to include at least one of your own Blogs, Articles or Ebooks in Trending Topics you curate.

How do I pick a Trending Topic?

Trending Topics are well crafted, current, relevant and informative. If you’re looking for a topic, think about what news stories are hot yet have durable interest. Think about what issues repeatedly surface in the media and your own conversations.

One great way to come up with a Trending Topic is to think about the story-behind-the-story. For example, if a news story breaks about a food contamination outbreak, a good Trending Topic would be about the FDA’s policies regarding food inspections.

Also, think about the longevity of your subject matter. Some news items get a lot of coverage in a short amount of time, but other long-lasting pieces will often do a better job of retaining your readership. For example, instead of doing a Trending Topic on the latest starlet to end up in jail, a better Trending Topic would be “The Relationship between Celebrity, Media and the Law.”

Tips for Building Trending Topics

Well-crafted titles tend to be short, descriptive and include important keywords relevant to the topic. Think of your Trending Topic’s title as a newspaper headline: it should be clear, informative and eye-catching.

Your title also helps determine how easily search engines will find your Topic. Including common search terms in the title can increase your topic’s visibility.

Another way to come up with a title is to think about how people will search for information about the subject. For example, you may want to write your title in the form of a question, such as “What is nanotechnology?”, “What are the pros and cons of nuclear power?” or “How should campaign finance work?”

Images add important visual interest to Trending Topics and are a great way to keep your readers interested and engaged with your work.

It's important to add a Featured Image to your Trending Topic’s display page so that it can be featured prominently on BestThinking. You can select an image from our library or add an image from a variety of other locations.

You can also add images to each item of Curated Content. You can do this by going to the Curated Content list and clicking “edit” beside an item. In the popup window, you can then select an image from the Web or upload your own image.

For any image you use, be sure to include the proper copyright and licensing information.

Curated Content

The heart of your Trending Topic is the list of Curated Content. For each item you add to this list, you get to share your own thoughts by posting commentary. You can also include a brief excerpt from the Blog, Article or Ebook that best exemplifies the key parts of your topic.

BestThinking is not simply a news aggregation website. You don’t just select the Blogs, Articles, and Ebooks that best explain your topic; you’re expected to modify and improve the Curated Content by providing your own insights through additional commentary and explanation. Also, Curators should include at least one Blog, Article or Ebook from BestThinking in each Trending Topic to further integrate their own voice with the rest of the dialogue.

Be sure to cite the source and author of each item of Curated Content you include in your Trending Topic. The source should be the publisher of the item (for example, the New York Times, Huffington Post, etc.) or the name of the Blog, not the name of a search engine. Always comply with the fair use provisions of the copyright law.

You can order the Curated Content items however you like. Some Curators add new items to the top of the list, while others prefer to gradually build an argument. Still others choose to explain a topic starting with the basics, and then proceed to more advanced or detailed ideas. to Shut Down Permanently on December 31, 2017

If you want to save a copy of your content, you must do so before the website shuts down on December 31, 2017. We will NOT be able to provide any assistance after the website shuts down. We are available at only until the shutdown to provide more information and assistance.

It was a noble 10-year experiment, but it turns out that the writers with the best content are the least adept at the tech required to publish under our model, which in hindsight, makes perfect sense. If you are dedicating your life to becoming an expert in your specialty, you don’t have a lot of time left for figuring out publishing tech.

It hasn't helped that we have entered an age of unprecedented polarization and antagonism which doesn't foster demand for a website dedicated to the respectful engagement of diverse views.

Thank you, everyone!
