Simply defined, merchandising is a process that presents products for sale in a retail environment. It is used to influence the buyer’s behavior and help take the guesswork out of shopping. The shopping experience should be one that is inviting, enjoyable, and stress-free. Shoppers should be able to find what they need easily and in a timely fashion. Retailers rely on merchandising to deliver...  Read More

My last post was about drone-brellas. Drones seem to have captured a lot of folks fancy, as if having great eyes in the sky looking down on our daily activities is inherently a good thing. Fast Company just had a posting the other day about how they took a drone out for a spin in Central Park, NY, getting a hands-on feel, so to speak, about what this great and destructive toy is really all...  Read More

Under the rubric of national security, drones are taking on a life of their own. Sadly, for those who believe that a voice of the people is needed whenever core rights and privileges are under review from those above, we may well have to get a grip on a digital version of that tried and true source of cover and protection from the storms heading our way …. BACK TO THE BASICS When the rains...  Read More

A couple evenings ago I Tweeted in frustration about why it is that homebrewed beer gets purposefully excluded in many bars that offer “domestic” draft specials. In the Power & Light District of Kansas City, Missouri, for example, the deal of the day at a sports tavern offered a $3 draft, if one selected a “domestic” beer. Corporate, domestic beers were what they meant. The homebrews on the same...  Read More

Hello to all. I’m glad to have the chance to write, inform, advocate, pontificate, and otherwise do as more than a few have accused of me over the years: stir the proverbial pot. Sometimes that will happen as I wax philosophical; mostly I’ll wane editorial or at least operational. I come from a long line of social justice advocates and nonprofit writers, grants and project design and promotional...  Read More

Facebook has come out with yet another API and we're (yet again) the better for it. The newest API is called the Payments Reporting API and it's available immediately. What it does is let you access daily transactional data which is a great improvement over the old way of receiving the data via e-mail not the best way of getting important information. This is why Facebook says this way is...  Read More

At noon London time on June 13, 2012, ICANN , the organization that oversees, among other things, the whole domain name system, will reveal the list of who is going after the new domain extensions and what those extensions are. This may sound boring and unimportant but it's part of a big, 6-year plan that should radically reshape the Internet . The who is not as important to the average person...  Read More

Facebook has announced that they've gotten rid of their old FBML pages so if you have any of those pages on Facebook then you're in for a big surprise next time you go look at your page. Of course, like with the Facebook Timelines and so many other things, the scammers and less than ethical people have already started to scare people so they can sell them new products that usually don't really...  Read More

I got this e-mail from Paul yesterday, and while it's a reasonable request on the surface of it, I thought my response would be valuable for you to read if you struggle with the same problem or help you get some understanding if you have the same complaint. Here is the e-mail: " Today is Sunday, my day, a day that I hate getting business emails. You have the whole week to send me your stuff but...  Read More

Marketing is really nothing more than communicating the value of you, your products and services, and your company to your prospects in the most effective (and efficient) way you can so that they will take the action you want them to take. Usually there is a series, maybe a long series, of actions you need your prospect to take to get to how you are defining "success". Each of those actions...  Read More

As you probably know, Google Analytics automatically tracks all of the referrals and search queries that send traffic to your website. But did you know... That you can customize any link to your site that you control/define and get the exact same information from those links. By that I mean everything from banner ads to text links to forum posts to even Twitter Tweets ! Well, you can do...  Read More

Regardless of your definition of success, there are, oddly enough, a great number of common characteristics that are shared by successful businesspeople. You can place a check beside each characteristic that you feel you possess. This way, you can see how you stack up. Even if you don't have all of these characteristics, don't fret. Most can be learned with practice and by developing a winning...  Read More

The importance of list building is legend but after you've convinced someone to subscribe to your list, then what? You want to build a relationship with your subscribers and engage them so they will remain a subscriber and come to know, like and trust you. Sounds good but it also sounds like a lot of work. Well, it can be a LOT of work unless you use the right tools and that's where an e-mail...  Read More

Not long ago one of the people I really respect, master copywriter Michel Fortin, told me about a free resource he uses to help automate certain tasks (even automate reminders) and I've fallen in love with it. It's called If-This-Then-That and the concept is very simple, if some event happens then do something. So there is a trigger event -- the THIS portion -- and a action event -- the THAT...  Read More

Ryan Lee created a blog post titled " Your Online Business “Spring Cleaning” Checklist " where he gave 7 different things you should clean up in your business. I liked it so much that I thought I'd share it with you along with some of my own comments. Ryan says he is "slightly obsessed with finding out how to make everything in life more simple." I agree with Ryan completely, I've also been...  Read More

by Debbie Josendale A client called to tell me that her team was almost giddy as they reviewed the final version of their new website prior to go-live. Now mind you her team is a bunch of Doctors and the word giddy is not typically used to describe a Doctors behavior! This got me thinking about the whole process of designing a website, and it struck me that it’s a lot like having a...  Read More

I do recall when I was first interviewing for a job as Chief Librarian for The Sacramento Bee I flew out to Northern California and arrived in the evening. My first dinner was with my good friend and still friend Peter Haugen and his boss Scott Lebar. This was a frustrating little thing and took me longer than it should so I thought I'd share it with you so if you or your coder/programmer had to do the same thing you wouldn't waste the time and effort that I did. Facebook is making a major change to their default landing page starting on March 30, 2012 and the online business community is flooded with commentary about how this will ruin online businesses that have been relying on Facebook. Much is written about value . Even more is said about it. Value just might be the most overused word in business today. At the organization level, we hear about customer value, shareholder value, and enterprise value. At the department level, Product Management wants its products to be perceived as good value not high cost. Sales wants to sell from value rather than feature/functions. And,...  Read More

“To truly know the world, look deeply within your own being; to truly know yourself, take real interest in the world.” (Rudolf Steiner) Not all that long ago, we thought that Man was the only sentient animal that walked among the curious amalgam of creatures that share this earth. By virtue of our brain or consciousness or soul we disenfranchised all others and placed ourselves outside of the...  Read More

Go to the Warrior Forum or other marketing forum and you'll see it . Go to Facebook or Twitter and you'll see it . Heck, look at your hard disk and you'll see it . As I publish ebooks it occurs to me that the greatest advantage for readers is the fact that we are digitally publishing many, many books. In the future we may rely on this format to help organize information. Everyone is comfortable and aware of content organized in books.
