Judge Craig Brown is the fourth blind District Court judge in the history of North Carolina. After serving almost twelve years on the District Court bench, he retired in 2008. His forthcoming book, Forks in the Road, describes his ends and beginnings, fortitude, and trials and tribulations.

Judge Craig B. Brown is a 1979 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1983, he received his law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, as well as a Master's Degree in Public Policy Sciences from Duke University. In 1983, he began to practice criminal and civil law with the then-Durham law firm of Spears, Barnes, Baker and Hoof. In 1989, he became a junior Partner in the same law firm, now titled Spears, Barnes, Baker, Hoof, Warinio, Brown, Whaley.

Brown next specialized in criminal cases, especially death penalty work. From 1992 until 1996, he served as TROSA Board Chairman, which led to the founding of the largest drug rehabilitation therapeutic community in North Carolina. In 1995, Brown was named North Carolina Lawyer of the Year for his work on TROSA.

In 1996, he was appointed to the District Court bench and re-elected in 1998, 2002, and 2006. During his tenure on the bench, Brown was extremely active in developing comprehensive drug treatment and drug rehabilitation programs in Durham County.
