Since the mid 90's, there has been a great deal of interest in the topic of quantum computing, largely due to Shor's algorithm for prime factoring. This algorithm demonstrated that if a quantum computer could be built, current schemes of public key encryption would become worthless.
There are still a number of questions on the feasibility of a practical, large scale, quantum computer, but it is a topic for which I have a great deal of interest and fascination.
