Richard James Burgess has been the Director of Marketing and Sales at Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and Smithsonian Global Sound in Washington DC since 2001 and is now also the Director for Resource Development for the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. He has over 40 years international music business experience as a music producer, audio engineer, major label recording artist, studio musician, artist manager, major and independent label consultant, and booking agency owner in the UK, Europe, Australasia, and the United States with many multi-platinum, platinum and gold records to his name. He authored the book, The Art of Music Production (pub. Music Sales, London, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Ed.and originally entitled The Art of Record Production), and lectures on the subject of record production and the music business. He is on the executive board of the Music Managers Forum (US), is the co-chair of the national Producer and Engineer Wing Compensation Committee for the Recording Academy, and Acting Treasurer of the Association for the Study of the Art of Record Production. He was educated at Berklee College of Music, Boston, and Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Glamorgan. He played with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Great Britain and has won awards, as a musician, from Music Week, British Arts Council, Park Lane Group, and the Greater London Arts Association. He is a member of Mensa.
